Bill Scoggins
President of Colorado School of Mines
Abstract:
Bill Scoggins, President of Colorado School of Mines, will present an overview of current energy-related research at the School. He will also discuss workforce development issues for the oil and gas industry in the context of broader engineering education trends.
Biography:
Dr. M. W. Scoggins was appointed Mines’ 16th president in June 2006. Prior to coming to Mines, Dr. Scoggins had over 34 years experience in the global oil and gas business with Mobil and ExxonMobil.
Dr. Scoggins received his undergraduate education at the University of Tulsa, where he was in the Petroleum Engineering honors program and was a member of Tau Beta Pi. He received his Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, and returned to the University of Tulsa for his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering.
Dr. Scoggins began has career with Mobil in 1970 and had assignments throughout the United States, as well as in The Hague, Jakarta, Indonesia and London. He was President of International E & P and Global Exploration and a member of the Executive Committee of Mobil Oil prior to its merger with Exxon in late 1999. Following the merger, he served as Executive Vice President of ExxonMobil Production Company until his retirement in 2004.
Dr. Scoggins was elected to the University of Tulsa Board of Trustees in 2005 and served on the executive committee; the finance, investment and audit committee; and the faculty and curriculum committee until accepting the presidency at Mines. Dr. Scoggins was inducted into the College of Engineering’s Hall of Fame in 1998.
Dr. Scoggins serves on the Board of Directors for Questar Corporation, a natural gas-focused energy company; Trico Marine Services, Inc., a global provider of marine support to the offshore oil and gas industry; and Venoco, Inc., an independent energy company engaged in the acquisition and development of oil and natural gas properties in California and Texas. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Colorado’s Renewable Energy Authority, the Colorado Oil and Gas Association and the Jefferson Economic Council, and is co-chair of the recently formed Colorado Energy Coalition.
As part of the Continuing Education program of this local section, we are holding an Extended Session immediately following the luncheon presentation during the April 17 SPE-OKC meeting. The session will be held in the same room.
The topic:
FRACTURING DESIGNS FOR UNCONVENTIONAL PRODUCTION ZONES
Presented by Terry Palisch, Sr. Staff Petroleum Engineer, CARBO Ceramics
Class time: 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (It may go longer, depending on the number of questions and discussion accompanying the presentation)
Cost: There will be no charge for this session.
Continuing Education Credits: 2.
Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity.

TOPIC SUMMARY:
Slickwater (a.k.a. linear gel, hybrid or water) frac designs have been a major factor in the development of today’s unconventional gas reservoirs such as shale plays and Coal Bed Methane. However, most in our industry have been trained in the more conventional, cross-linked fluid fracturing. This extended session will focus on the major issues to be considered when designing a slickwater frac, such as fracture complexity, proppant transport, and fracture conductivity, with particular attention paid to those issues that distinguish the water-frac approach from the crosslinked-gel-frac methodology. The material presented will be supplemented by descriptive field case experiences. The intent is to provide a platform for thought-provoking Q & A and subsequent discussion, for which the final half-hour of the session will be devoted.
THE INSTRUCTOR:
As a Sr. Staff Petroleum Engineer with CARBO Ceramics since 2004, Terry Palisch advises clients with the goal of optimizing fracture designs by accurately predicting production under realistic conditions. He started as a petroleum engineer with ARCO in Alaska, working in that capacity for 10 years followed by four years with ARCO in Algeria, North Africa. Among his assignments in Alaska Terry supervised the $10,000,000 (annual) fracture stimulation program at ARCO’s Kuparuk River Field. He holds a BS in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla and enhanced his teaching and training expertise through teaching high school Algebra & Statistics for four years in Wylie, TX. He has authored several technical papers.
